Yesterday, one of the people on the mathematics education google group shared Algebra by Example. This site has some really great algebraic examples that include having students do analytical work.
In addition, they ask questions and have the students answer why the person did or didn't do something. I like this because too many times students do not stop to really look at what they are doing
They also show how to do the work correctly but take time to ask why this child didn't do something. Then there is the your turn part doing the same type of problem. This is good because the why requires higher level thinking and helps develop critical thinking skills.
Again, there is the alternating problem done correctly and the problem done incorrectly so students learn error analysis and hopefully will transfer this knowledge to their own work.
I have plans to incorporate this material into my classes next year to improve my student's performance. I appreciate this website and its materials.
