Station Setup & Tiered Structure

Station 1: Teacher-Led Station (Targeted Support & Extension)

• Objective: Direct instruction tailored to the specific readiness level of the group sitting at the table.

• Setup: Horseshoe table or small cluster of desks near the whiteboard/screen.

Materials: Whiteboards, markers, dry erasers, graphic organizers.

Group A (Needs Support) Re-teach core concept with physical or visual models (e.g., algebra tiles, fraction bars). Work through 2–3 guided problems together.

Group B (On Grade Level) Address common misconceptions identified in the warm-up. Guide through standard application problems with fading scaffolds.

Group C (Advanced/Ready) Skip foundational review. Pose an open-ended extension challenge or a multi-step real-world problem.

Station 2: Collaborative Practice & Tiered Tasks (Peer Learning)

• Objective: Build fluency and problem-solving through peer discussion and structured collaboration.

• Setup: Pods of 4 desks with clear roles (e.g., Reader/Task Keeper, Scribe, Checker, Presenter).

• Materials: Color-coded task card sets (Tiered), sentence stems for math talk.

• Task Card Tiers:

  • Green Cards (Tier 1): Scaffolding included (formula guides, visual hints). Focuses on standard computation and direct application.

  • Blue Cards (Tier 2): Standard grade-level word problems requiring 2–3 steps.

    Black Cards (Tier 3): "Find the Error" challenges, multi-step optimization problems, or logic puzzles using the day's math concept.

• Station 3: Digital Adaptive Practice & Error Analysis (Independent)

  • Objective: Reinforce skills independently through technology or self-checking written tasks.

  • Setup: Student desks or laptop station facing away from high-traffic zones to minimize distractions.

  • Materials: Laptops/tablets, headphones, scratch paper, self-checking answer keys.

  • Activities:

    • Option A (Digital): 10–12 minutes on adaptive software (e.g., IXL, DeltaMath, Khan Academy) set to targeted skill paths, followed by a 3-minute reflection.

  • Option B (Paper-Based): "Math Medical Center" (Error Analysis worksheet) where students diagnose wrong steps in solved problems and fix them.

    For the first rotation, begin with stations, 1, 2, 3 in order. For the next rotation, those at station 1 move to station 2, station 2 goes to station 3, and those at station 3 move to station 1. 

    Classroom Management Tips

  • Visual Countdown: Display a digital timer on the main screen showing remaining station time and transition cues.
  • Transition Protocol: Use a chime or signal. Signal 1: Clean up and push in chairs. Signal 2: Walk quietly to the next station.
  • "Ask 3 Before Me" Rule: Students at Stations 2 and 3 must check with their group members before interrupting the teacher at Station 1.
